Update on Bond Street Station Upgrade Tunnelling Works

Monday, February 29th, 2016

Tunnelling works in Bond Street Station are now almost complete. The Southern tunnels were delivered in September 2015 and 30% of the Northern tunnels have already been handed over to the fit out team. The completion of the remaining secondary lining in the Northern tunnels and demobilisation of the Dr. Sauer & Partners team from Bond Street is scheduled for April 2016.

In the last months, all efforts were focused on the Northern tunnels where the last element of the primary lining excavation (Lift 3 Shaft) was carried out in October 2015. This structure will provide a step-free route to Jubilee and Central lines. Additionally it will grant access to the new Crossrail station in the future.

The largest challenge which the team faced regarding the secondary lining was finding the best way to construct the inclined barrel of Escalators 9 & 10, maintaining the highest health and safety standards. A temporary moving platform was manufactured and installed. Both the application of the regulating layer and waterproofing layer were executed using this platform. It also served as a key element when installing the shutters of the invert pours on the slope.

In December the innovation and excellence of Bond Street Station Upgrade was recognised by the NCE Tunnelling & Underground Space awards 2015. It was awarded the prize for Global Tunnelling Project of the Year (up to $500M). Dr. Sauer & Partners is proud to be part of the outstanding “ONE TEAM” that managed to secure this prestigious award in a competition with worthy contenders.
