Sauer to present the 2008 William Barclay Parsons Technical Lecture, the lecture will be held at the City University of New York Graduate Center-Recital Hall at 365 Fifth Ave, New York, NY on Thursday April 17, 2008. The lecture topic will be " Tunneling and Beyond".

Excavation is underway on what will be California’s longest highway tunnel. The Devil’s Slide Tunnel will bypass a section of Hwy 1 south of San Francisco plagued by landslides and grade subsistence that have closed the road for months at a time.
In September, Caltrans officials, local politicians and the public gathered at the construction site to celebrate this major milestone that has been more than 40 years in the making.
The North Link Transit Partners Joint Venture (NTP JV) was selected to provide final design services for the Sound Transit's University Link project in Seattle, WA. The JV is comprised of Jacobs Associates, HNTB Corporation, and Earth Tech, Inc.
Both shafts, the Main Shaft and the Ancillary Shaft have been constructed, and the Concourse Cross Adits North and South have been excavated. At 45ft width, these are the largest tunnels excavated in soft ground in the United States to date using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). To minimize the risk of ground loss in the extremely complex geology, the dual side wall drift excavation method was used. In addition, the ground was improvement by dewatering and jet grouting and special pre-support measures such as pipe umbrellas, spiling and grouting are implemented.
Traffic Situation & Metro Extension
'The Washington DC region is the third most traffic congested area in the nation and the problem is only worsening due to urban sprawling occurring in Northern Virginia. Currently, the Washington DC METRO system only goes as far west as the Vienna stop, which leaves a gaping hole between western communities such as Tysons Corner, Reston, the Dulles Airport, and Ashburn.
Services Provided by URS/DSC
The URS / Dr. G. Sauer Corporation JV was awarded the Caltrans on-call contract for providing Construction Inspection Services for the Devil’s Slide Tunnel project in Pacifica, California. The URS/DSC JV will provide SEM/NATM engineers and field inspectors, engineering geologists, civil, mechanical and electrical inspection personnel and other technical support services as needed. URS/DSC will be working as an integrated Team with the Caltrans Construction Management Team in their field office, which is located in Pacifica, just South of San Francisco.

MBTA of Boston, MA opens first new transit tunnel line since 1918. The opening marked the completion of the Silverline Phase II segment of the Bus Rapid Transit system in the downtown business district. The new tunnel route is constructed beneath the historic Russia Wharf waterfront complex and crosses the Fort Point channel to the Court House Station. To complete this challenging engineering project several innovative methods of tunnel construction were used, including NATM and immersed tube tunnels.
